Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme is to come to the northern part of the Borough

Good News: A piece of good news was announced in October 2011. Transport for London, in conjunction with Wandsworth Council, is proposing to extend the very popular Central London cycle hire scheme to a large part of the borough in 2013.

Parts of the Borough to be included: The projected area for the scheme is that part of the Borough lying east of Putney High Street and north of the South Circular. You can see details of the scheme at

Docking Stations – You can make suggestions where they ought to be located: Right now (October 2011),  the Council is looking for suggestions for 50 to 60 docking stations where the bicycles will be available. Lots of people have already recommended particular sites. You can send your own suggestions by email to Helen Griffin at or call 0208 871 7983.

Wandsworth Living Streets responds:  WLS congratulates Wandsworth Council and TfL on this initiative. We have no doubt that it will encourage more people living in Wandsworth, as well as visitors from elsewhere, to travel around and explore our part of London by bicycle. This, in turn,  will make a modest contribution to reducing the number of motor vehicles on our roads. And it will help shift everyone’s mindsets towards recognizing that our highways are public space in which there are various different, equally legitimate, participants – in particular, pedestrians and cyclists, bus travelers as well as motorized vehicles. Accordingly, Wandsworth Living Streets is submitting a whole list of recommended locations to the Council.  We are focussing on sites  near railway and tube stations in the northern part of the Borough; Putney, Wandsworth and Clapham Junction  town centres; Battersea Park; and along the new CS8 Cycle Superhighway in Battersea.
